About Us

Fifth Ward Water System is a restricted Corporation owned by its member customers, which means that only customers that reside in our service area and purchase water from this water system,  are eligible to become partial owners of this corporation.  These member customers elect seven Board of Directors to oversee and run this Corporation.  The Water System is composed of seven districts and each Board of Director is assigned to a particular district based upon his/her residence.  A huge wall map of all districts is on display at the Water System office for customer review.

To assure that FWWS furnishes clean and safe drinking water, Board of Health constantly monitors the physical operation of this water system.  Chlorine water samples are taken daily, 7 days per week, by our technicians and must be within the low and high levels set by Board of Health.  Monthly, Board of Health pulls its own water samples to test for contamination.  An annual report of all findings by Board of Health for this water system is published for review by our customers.  Under the report section of this web site,  a copy of Board of Health findings is available for viewing.

FWWS main plant of operation is located in Belledeau.  It consist of four water wells, a pump station where Chlorine is injected into the water and two above ground mixing and storage tanks.  Also FWWS has two elevated storage tanks, with a capacity of 250,000 gallons each,  stratigically located in our service area to provide reserve storage of water.

Fifth Ward Water System has installed generators at each well site and pump station site,  should the power go off for an extended period of time.  Therefore, there is no need for customers to store water because of the threat of storms or hurricanes.

Regretfully, due to the small size of our water system, FWWS is not able to furnish fire protection to the extent that municipalities are able to.  Therfore Fire protection is a secondary responsibility subject to the limitations of our water system.
